Electricity is an essential part of our modern lives. It powers our economy, generating the economic activity that underpins our high living standards. It also allows Canadians to enjoy the comforts of modern life, from warm homes and warm meals to internet access and entertainment. The full enjoyment of these benefits depends on electricity remaining affordable for people across the income spectrum. But affordable electricity appears to be a growing challenge for Ontarians. In fact, electricity prices in Ontario have risen substantially over the last decade, placing a burden on many Ontarian households. Indeed, the province of Ontario has the fastest growing electricity prices in the country and its cities have some of the highest average residential monthly bills in Canada… by the Fraser Institute.
Pinnacle Renewable Energy recently purchased its 50th pellet mill from Andritz Feed & Biofuel, and officials from the company visited Andritz’s Muncy, Pennsylvania, manufacturing facility on June 20 to see the new biofuel pellet mill—a Sprout 26LM II—being made. Andritz pellet mills produce more than 50 percent of all biofuel pellets worldwide… by Andritz.
A BIOMASS pre-treatment technique could make biofuels cheaper, safer and up to 172% faster to produce, according to researchers. Methane is a biofuel commonly used in electricity generation, and is produced by fermenting organic material such as agricultural or forestry waste. The composition of lignocellulosic biomass feedstock is complex, which limits the accessibility of biodegradable organics, meaning that the process can take between weeks and months to complete. Pre-treatment methods can be used to increase feedstock biodegradability, but these often incur challenges such as the formation of byproducts that inhibit microbial activity… by Neil Clark.
A new multi-million-dollar sawmill facility planned for Bonfield is expected to create 90 jobs. Officials announced Thursday that International Wood Industries (IWI) is planning to invest approximately $140 million in the operation, to be located on a 212-acre site on Highway 17 and Trout Pond Road. IWI President Gary Medwid said the state-of-the-art facility will process both softwood and hardwood, producing lumber as well as value-added products such as tongue-and-groove decking, hardwood flooring and pre-packaged log homes. In addition, wood waste from the operation will be used on site to create pellets for home heating… by the Nugget.
Honeywell’s UOP has developed a renewable jet fuel processing technology, a renewable diesel process, as well as a joint venture, Envergent Technologies, that will market technologies and equipment for generating power, transportation fuel and heating oil from biomass using pyrolysis. UOP also owns a Renewable Energy & Chemicals business that produced green diesel using its Ecofining process… by Jim Anderson of UOP.
