MONTREALFeb. 12, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ – Air Canada has been named the 2018 Eco-Airline of the Year by the respected airline industry publication Air Transport World in its 44th Annual Airline Industry Achievement Awards. In recognizing Air Canada’s environmental accomplishments, ATW cited the carrier’s commitment to emissions reductions through supporting the development of alternative fuels and its numerous green programs and partnerships, including being the first airline in the world to voluntarily join the World Bank’s IMF Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition… by Air Canada.

Feb. 16, 2018 – Unlike automobiles and other light transport vehicles, airplanes face technical, safety and infrastructure challenges for being powered by electricity derived from renewable sources such as wind and power, hydrogen or fuel cell technology and will need a more energy-dense renewable fuel (i.e. bio-jet fuel). Electric aircraft are, currently, very small and are powered by batteries or photovoltaic solar panels. There are approximately 200 remote communities and industrial sites across Canada that rely on diesel fuel for electricity generation and heat. Many of these communities, which are not connected to the continental grid, are Indigenous or have significant Indigenous populations. While diesel generation is a well-known reliable source of energy in these communities, it comes with many environmental, social and economic disadvantages… by Government of Canada.

Feb. 12, 2018 – Natural gas pipelines that crisscross the Edmonton area will soon flow with an injection of renewable natural gas (RNG) from wood waste. Vancouver-based G4 Insights is demonstrating its proprietary pyrocatalytic hydrogenation technology that produces RNG from lignocellulosic biomass at an ATCO Gas Distribution site in Edmonton beginning in February. The project will see a demonstration unit hooked up to ATCO’s natural gas grid – a first for the company and the technology in Canada… by Maria Church

Feb. 13, 2018 – Saint-Michel-des-Saints will soon be home to Quebec’s largest pellet mill. After more than four years of development, La Granaudière will break ground in July with production expected to begin next year, Canadian Biomass has learned… by Maria Church.

MONTREALFeb. 16, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ – A consortium of companies comprising Air Liquide, AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals, Enerkem and the Port of Rotterdam has signed a project development agreement covering initial investments in an advanced waste-to-chemistry facility in Rotterdam. The facility will be the first of its kind in Europeto provide a sustainable alternative solution for non-recyclable wastes, converting waste plastics and other mixed wastes into new raw materials… by Enerkem.
