Europe – Wood-to-Biofuels I

A technology study had been commissioned on “drop-in” transportation biofuels from forestry biomass and wood residuals by a Swiss client, for a demonstration project in Australia.   Drop-in fuel technologies using forestry biomass as a feedstock include:

  1. Catalytic (Fast) Pyrolysis
  2. Hydrothermal Liquefaction
  3. Gasification

These are nascent technologies, with only a few even claiming, but not proven, to be ready for commercialization.  A review of this sector was conducted to identify the best drop-in fuel technologies and their providers from forestry biomass.  The report was interactive, with embedded hyperlinks to major references and company websites using or developing wood-to-(drop-in) fuel processes.  Much of the information was taken from the proprietary database of Sixth Element, which includes over 1,000 torrefaction, slow pyrolysis, fast pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction, hydrothermal carbonization, and biomass gasification ventures.

Sixth Element Sustainable Management maintains a comprehensive global database of over 1,000 biomass pyrolysis ventures. The Pyrolysis Venture Database is important for investors and entrepreneurs alike.  The information is a valuable resource for vetting the investment choices and assessing the competitive position of pyrolysis ventures.  Ventures often claim to have the best technology, but have no evidence to back it up.  The Pyrolysis Venture Database is a guide to where a venture stands relative to its peers and to the best-in-class technology providers.
